Volleyball Players Are Overhead Athletes: Why Shoulder Health Matters

Volleyball players are often thought of simply as athletes who hit, serve, block, and dive—but volleyball is also an overhead sport that places significant demands on the shoulder, elbow, spine, hips, and lower extremities.
Repeated serving, attacking, and blocking require the body to produce and control force overhead, often hundreds of times during practices, tournaments, and a long competitive season. When one part of the movement system is limited or fatigued, other areas may have to compensate.
Common Volleyball Injuries
Because of the repetitive overhead demands, volleyball athletes may experience:
Shoulder pain or rotator cuff irritation
Shoulder instability
Scapular movement dysfunction
Elbow pain
Low back pain
Hip and knee injuries
Ankle sprains
Overuse injuries related to training and competition volume
Shoulder health is especially important for volleyball players. A strong, mobile shoulder is only one part of the equation. Thoracic spine mobility, scapular control, core strength, hip mobility, and lower-extremity strength all contribute to efficient overhead movement.
Treating the Volleyball Athlete—Not Just the Injury
At Athletic Edge and Wellness, we look beyond the painful area. Our approach to volleyball physical therapy considers the entire movement chain—from the feet and hips to the trunk, shoulder, and arm.
Movement assessments such as our SCORE assessment can help identify mobility, strength, asymmetry, and movement deficits that may affect performance or contribute to injury risk.
Treatment may include targeted strength and mobility work, manual therapy, movement retraining, performance therapy, and a progressive return-to-sport program when an athlete is recovering from injury.
Keep Your Overhead Game Strong
Volleyball is an overhead sport. Taking care of the entire body—not just the hitting shoulder—can help athletes stay healthy, perform better, and handle the demands of their season.
If you're a volleyball player dealing with pain, returning from an injury, or looking to improve your movement and performance, Athletic Edge and Wellness can help you build a stronger foundation for your sport.
Move better. Perform better. Be better.
