Golf Physical Therapy

We Understand The Complexity of the Golf Swing

Developing Efficient Swing Mechanics is Key

Golfers have unique needs and demands that must be addressed when designing a physical therapy program or a performance program. One must understand the complexity of the golf swing and the body's movement principles.

Golf Physical Therapy and Performance Training can keep your swinging; whether your are looking to get back on the course after an injury or looking to improve your score. We have you covered from the front nine to the back nine.

develop efficient golf swinging mechanics

Efficient Swing Mechanics Require:

  • Mobility in the lower back, neck, shoulders, hips, knees and ankle to allow full range of motion, especially in the follow through

  • Stability in your hips, knees, and core

  • Strength and power  to maximize swing potential and distance

  • Endurance to maintain mechanics and performance over the course of a round and season

Efficient and powerful swing mechanics are developed through a combination of factors;  proper hip-shoulder separation, linear and rotational power, and core stability.  Power is developed from the lower body, transferred through the core, and dissipated through the club into the ball.  If any part is out of sync, the body can break down and start to compensate. This can lead to pain, discomfort, and ultimately injury.

Common Golf Injuries We Treat

Lower Back Pain
Due to high forces on one side of the body  during twisting especially on the  follow through

Shoulder Pain
Due to rotator cuff muscles or imbalance

Elbow or Wrist Pain
From repetitive gripping, weakness , or poor mechanics

Hip and Knee Pain

From high rotational forces during a swinging  and/or poor mobility in these areas

Foot Pain

Due to lack of mobility in foot, wearing cleats, or  extended walking on uneven terrain

Golf Performance Therapy

Is your handicap slowly creeping up?  As we age, our posture changes, are joints get stiffer and we lose muscle strength. This can become cumulative and start to limit your swing - both in distance and control.

Athletic Edge and Wellness has developed  the S.C.O.R.E. Card to identify potential areas of concern for the golfer; this includes a mobility and strength evaluation in the neck, back, wrists, shoulders, and hips, and an assessment of balance and and core control. From there, we can develop a comprehensive individualized golf specific conditioning program to improve your weakness.

Using an integrated approach, we can help  optimize your golfing  mechanics,  maximize your swing, and improve your swing consistency by:

  • Improving  golf-specific mobility with manual therapy, soft tissue massage, and flexibility techniques

  • Building  a strong foundation at the core and hips with specific corrective exercises and dynamic stability drills

  • Enhancing your golf swing mechanics  by addressing faulty movement patterns

  • Improving postural control,  balance, and stance

  • Reducing pain and soreness  which can impair your overall swing and movement

Performance therapy can help golfers of all ages; with the younger golfer it tends to  be lack of strength and coordination, while the older golfer lacks motion and mobility.

Do not let pain continue to get in the way of an enjoyable season. See a physical therapist who understands how the body must work in order to swing the club efficiently both  in and out of season. Contact Athletic Edge and Wellness today and book an appointment with our golf specialist in our Algonquin, IL Performance Center.  A physical therapist can perform an assessment and provide treatment without a physician prescription in many cases.
