We use our elbows, wrists, and hands for so many things during normal day to day tasks and activities. We rely on our elbows, wrists, and hands for personal care, eating, and manipulation of objects. Your elbows, wrists, and hands are composed of a large variety of muscles, tendons, bones, and joints and it may be difficult to determine exactly where your pain is coming from. Often the elbow is the “receiver” of pain, not the “giver”. Many athletes who have an elbow problem, also have a shoulder problem and vice versa.
So what’s causing my elbow or wrist pain?
Medial Epicondylitis (golfer’s elbow)- is a condition that causes pain on the inner side of the elbow. It is often caused by excess or repetitive stress of gripping by the wrist and finger muscles. Poor form during sports such as golf, racquet sports, weight training, baseball and other throwing sports can cause pain. The elbow and hand may feel stiff and weakness may be present.
Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) - is a condition that causes pain on the outside of the elbow. This painful condition of the elbow is caused by overuse. Playing tennis or other racquet sports with poor form or inappropriate equipment can cause symptoms. Certain occupations are more prone to have symptoms: computer workers, hairdressers, cooks, plumbers, painters, and carpenters. Gripping may become very painful.
Little League Elbow - is a broad term that generally refers to a medial epicondyle stress fracture along the inside of the arm at the growth plate. Most of the time, the injury is due to overuse, repetitive stress without proper rest, and/or poor throwing mechanics but it can also be caused by a single, painful occurrence. This is prevalent in children between the ages of 8-15.
Ulnar Collateral Strain/Tear - the ulnar collateral ligament of the elbow is most often injured by repeated stress from overhead movements such as throwing a baseball. Mild to moderate symptoms may include pain on the inside of the elbow, decreased velocity with throwing, and weakness in the arm. A sudden “pop” or pain along the inside of the elbow and the inability to throw may lead to a tear which is referred to Tommy John injury
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) – impacts approximately 5% of all Americans. The carpal tunnel is designed to protect the median nerve on the inside of your wrist, in addition to protecting the tendons used to bend your fingers. The carpal tunnel can become constricted, which can result in pain, tingling and numbness in the fingers specifically in the thumb, 2nd, and 3rd fingers. Carpal tunnel is typically caused by an injury or by repetitive job-related use: such as assembly-line work, keyboard-heavy work, or driving heavy machinery.
Cubital Tunnel Syndrome – much like carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome is a nerve entrapment in the elbow region which can lead to elbow, wrist, and hand pain. It is caused by repetitive pressure ore friction on the ulnar nerve, which is located on the place inside of the elbow. When pressure is put on the cubital tunnel and surrounding nerves, it can cause pain, numbness, and tingling most predominately in the 4th and 5th fingers.
